Learning to See: Photographing Sculpture in the Landscape (September 03, 2026)

Spend the day exploring the creative possibilities of photographing sculpture within the remarkable landscape of Cold Hollow Sculpture Park. During this 6.5-hour, hands-on workshop, Wayne Tarr, M.Photog.,Cr., CPP, and Jamie Proctor-Brassard, M.Photog.,Cr., will help participants slow down, look more carefully, and move beyond simply documenting a sculpture to creating photographs with intention and personal vision. Through demonstrations, guided exercises, individual coaching, and independent exploration, participants will work with composition, perspective, scale, negative space, light, shadow, texture, and the relationship between David Stromeyer’s sculptures and the surrounding Vermont landscape. Participants will learn to simplify visually complicated scenes, separate sculptures from distracting backgrounds, explore how changing camera position alters a composition, and use afternoon light and weather to create mood. Creative challenges will include photographing a sculpture as a complete work, within its environment, as an abstract detail, and as part of a short visual story. The workshop will also explore how a series of photographs can reveal different interpretations of the same sculpture. This workshop welcomes photographers of all experience levels. Expect a relaxed, supportive day with moderate walking, plenty of time to photograph, and opportunities to share images and receive feedback. Participants will leave with stronger photographs, practical compositional tools, and a more intentional way of seeing—not only sculpture, but the visual world around them.

In Bloom: Creative Exploration at the Flower Farm (September 07, 2026)

Trade the classroom for the flower fields in this immersive, hands-on photography experience designed to spark creativity and expand your artistic vision. There are no lengthy slide presentations—just guided practice, creative demonstrations and inspirations, and plenty of time to photograph in a stunning flower farm setting.We'll explore techniques for creating beautiful floral imagery through discussions on flower arranging for still lifes, composition, color theory, and working with warm, sun-kissed natural light. Participants will have the freedom to photograph in the way that inspires them most, whether that's crafting flower arrangements and intentional tabletop scenes or wandering the fields alongside the bees, capturing the beauty of early autumn blooms – or both!This collaborative workshop encourages experimentation and artistic play. Depending on your interests, we'll explore macro photography, focus stacking, in-camera multiple exposures, intentional camera movement (ICM), and creative Lensbaby techniques. Bring your curiosity, your camera, and a willingness to try something new as we celebrate the endless creative possibilities that flowers provide.

Fundamentals of Photography with Don Chick (September 13, 2026)

There is lighting and then there is Lighting for Portraiture! Are you looking or see-ing? When you look at the 3 egg images below, what do you see? Study it, ask yourself "why"? When you look at the mannequin head (her name is Mercedes) what do you see? Study it too, again ask yourself "why"? Seeing is a skill you develop over time through practice, practice, practice! In this class Don will provide instruction & exercises that you can do to learn to see. He will discuss light on objects that make seeing the light easier... light on eggs, of all things. Then we will look at light on a mannequin head so you will learn to "see" the light and develop your portrait lighting skills. Finally we will practice lighting a real, live human! This progression will help you grow your ability to "see"! Along the way Don will show you how to properly use the lighting tools. Large light modifiers, small light modifiers and their effect on the final image. And much more.

The pursuit of excellence is not about perfection. It is about letting our best selves show up to do the best work we’re meant to do. It’s about discovery – discovering new knowledge, new skills, and cultivating talents, all in service of our art, our business, and the people whose lives we aspire to touch. What is a good benchmark for pursuing excellence? Image competition. It’s a journey that can lead to improved skills, more earning capacity, and better recognition through branding and marketing.

During this two-day program, Kristy Steeves, who is a PPA approved juror, will talk about what makes an image merit-worthy. She will also show us common pitfalls, using her own work, that keep images from doing well. She will then show you how to prepare your images for competition by sharing her favorite editing techniques. As a special bonus Kristy will critique some of our images to give us a leg up on competition.

A couple of years ago Kristy accidentally stumbled onto something that few people know about … and it’s a HUGE game changer when it comes to editing images! And guess what? She’s going to share that information with us! And if you attend both days you will receive 10 digitally painted backgrounds that Kristy created as a thank you gift! Both programs are via Zoom so you can learn from the comfort of your home or your studio!

Kristy Steeves graduated from Indiana University with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in journalism and political science. She worked as a television news reporter for 25 years before switching careers to become a professional photographer. She specializes in children, high school seniors, corporate headshots, weddings, pets, and wildlife. Kristy is actively involved in the photography industry serving as a PPA approved juror and vice president of Professional Photographers of Northeast Ohio. She also served as an elected council member for PPA and for the Board of Governors with the American Society of Photographers.

Kristy has won various awards including 4 television Emmy awards, PPA Diamond Photographer of the Year, Ohio Photographer of the Year and is a four-time finalist for the IPC Grand Imaging Awards. Kristy has been a PPA webinar instructor, an Imaging USA speaker, and has earned PPA’s 100EDU speaker bar. She is also the recipient of the ASP Gold Medallion and State Elite award. She is an ASP Fellow – the highest honor a professional photographer can achieve.

GLAMOUR LIGHTING WITH LEDs
Rick will share his techniques for creating beautiful, dimensional Glamour portraits using LED lighting. Learn how light placement, direction, and modifiers can shape the face and create impact.

FLY THE DRESS & VEIL
Movement can transform an ordinary portrait into something dramatic. Rick will demonstrate his techniques for flying the dress and veil, creating beautiful motion while maintaining a strong pose and composition.

THE ART OF HAND POSING
Hands are one of the most challenging—and often overlooked—elements of portrait posing.

Rick will demonstrate how he relaxes and directs his clients, then show his approach to positioning the hands, wrists, fingers, and arms so they appear graceful, natural, and elegant.

HEADSHOTS WITH IMPACT
A powerful headshot requires more than a beautiful expression. Rick will demonstrate how careful posing and the use of accent lighting can add separation, dimension, and drama to the portrait.

RETOUCHING WITH EVOTO
The photograph isn't finished when the shutter is pressed. Rick will complete the process by demonstrating his Evoto retouching workflow, showing how he enhances the final Glamour portrait while maintaining a natural, professional appearance.
